Anne-Marieke Smid, MSc, PhD
Graduate Research Assistant
Anne-Marieke joined the Simpson Centre in July 2024 and works primarily on the BMO Ag controversies project. Concurrently, she is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Anne-Marieke obtained her PhD at the Animal Welfare Program of the University of British Columbia. In her PhD, she studied the preferences of dairy cattle for different types of outdoor access, as well as how these influence dairy cattle behaviour.
In her post doc, she works on a large epidemiological study in which she investigates how different types of outdoor access affect dairy cow health, milk quality, and dairy farm profitability. In addition, she conducted several qualitative research studies in which she investigated the perspectives of dairy farmers on the provision of outdoor access to dairy cows, as well as the effects of dairy farm tours on public perceptions of dairy farming.
Her overall aim is to contribute to the development of more sustainable animal production systems, using quantitative and qualitative research.
