Farzana Shirin, PhD
Postdoctoral Associate
Farzana holds a Ph.D. in Applied and Agricultural Economics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with interdisciplinary training in policy analysis. Her research spans diverse areas including global agriculture, climate change, and food security. As a doctoral student, Farzana examined the effectiveness of non-reciprocal trade agreements in boosting agricultural exports from developing countries, the impacts of weather shocks on rural household food security, and the implications of national education programs on student outcomes in Bangladesh.
At the Simpson Centre, her research continues to explore the intersections of economics, environmental and food policy, with a current focus on consumer preferences regarding government interventions in carbon taxation and emission reduction in the Canadian agricultural sector. Farzana aims to use her skills in econometrics, machine learning, and causal inference to provide policymakers with detailed analyses that support more strategic and effective decision-making.
