Sunbeam Rahman, MSc, MGIS
Graduate Research Assistant
Sunbeam Rahman is a Geographic Information System (GIS) expert with a strong academic and professional background in geography and spatial data science. He is currently pursuing a Master of Geographic Information Systems (MGIS) degree at the University of Calgary. Sunbeam previously completed both an MSc and a bachelor’s degree in Geography and Environment from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Professionally, he has over a decade of experience in several international NGOs, government organizations, and private enterprises as a spatial data researcher and GIS specialist.
Sunbeam began his career in climate change and adaptation in Bangladesh, where he demonstrated his specialization in remote sensing and GIS. In 2015, he collaborated with a research team from the University of Bergen, Norway, to investigate transformative climate knowledge based on the experiences of fish farmers in Northeast Bangladesh. In 2018, he worked with agricultural experts to develop a systematic and automated workflow for spatial data processing and mapping of rice growth stages in Bangladesh using Sentinel-1 satellite images. This workflow provided smartphone-based alerts for pest and disease outbreaks to the paddy farmers. Through these roles, he has made significant contributions to various organizations and projects, demonstrating a strong commitment to leveraging spatial technology for environmental and hazard management, climate change, agriculture and sustainable resource management.
